(in a coffee shop. a girl, claire, is sitting, while a boy, derek, stands over her. the two are talking, but the conversation seems strained)
Derek: So, Claire, what exactly are you doing here?
Claire: (speaking without looking at him) Meeting Julia. It's important, and we'll need to be alone.
Derek: Can I ask what it's about?
Claire: Go ahead.
Derek: Right. What's so important.
Claire: Broken shoe.
Derek: Broken shoe?
Claire: Yes, broken shoe. It's, oh, never mind. You wouldn't understand.
Derek: It's not about the other day, when Marna's shoe broke at school and,
Claire: (spoken suddenly, as she's become uncomfortable. she's not looking around of Julia) No! Look Derek, it's been nice talking to you, but,
Derek: (cutting her off) Just because we went out, doens't mean,
Claire: Don't make this more awkward then it already is Derek!
Derek: (sits across from claire, grabbing her hands) Shhh Claire, stop making a scene.
Claire: (pulling away from derek and standing) I'm not making a scene, you're,
Julia: (has appeared behind claire with a coffee in her hand) Claire, sit down. (claire obliges) I knew I should have come over here as soon as I walked in.
Derek: (standing) Julia, good to see you again.
Julia: As to you, but I think it'd be best if you left. Claire seems upset.
Derek: (pulls Julia out of ear shot of Claire) Julia, please, could you talk to her?
Julia: You were the one who broke up with her.
Derek: I know, but,
Julia: Now, you're going out with someone who, though they don't talk much, they grew up together. How could you?
Derek: Well, the other day, Marna,
Julia: Yes, I know. Broken show. But me and Claire need to talk. (goes and sits where Derek was before)
Derek: I know, about broken shoe, she told me! Julia, we grew up together,
Julia: Derek.
Derek: Hey, I know when I'm not wanted! (storms away, out of the coffee shop)
Julia: Claire, are you going to be alright? i really should have come over, I didn't think,
Claire: DOn't worry Julia. I'm fine. I just can't believe him. I can't believe her. We grew up together!
Julia: I know, and it's tough. But don't worry. Broken shoe is just the beginning of the end.
(end scene)
